People in Rochester NY..Why do you think Tops is cheaper than Wegmans?

I live in Rochester New York and am a frequent shopper at Wegmans grocery store. I hear people all the time say that they don’t shop at Wegmans because it is too expensive and that Tops is cheaper. I have been to Tops to compare prices and they are consistently more expensive. ex 35lb of Tidy Cat Litter at Wegmans is $11 at Tops it is $16, Lean Cuisine at Wegmans is $2.99 and below and Tops the price starts at $3.29. I do agree that the Tops store brands are cheaper than the Wegmans store brands but I think that their quality isn’t nearly as good, but for name brand items I buy consistently I have only on one occasion seen a price at Tops that is cheaper than Wegmans (Hair Defrizzer). Tops does put out some good coupons sometimes but Wegmans accepts those coupons. So why do people think that Tops is cheaper than Wegmans? Is it because the Wegmans stores are nicer so people assume the food is more expensive?

Some items are cheaper at Tops than Wegmans…but I agree…overall it’s not anymore expensive…or much more expensive. Also take into account their produce…. Wegmans quality is much much better than Tops’. I’d rather pay 15% more for my produce and get a good product.
