Should my website be local or nationwide?

I have created a couponing site that has alot of potential. I want to know should I aim locally on the major search engines then nationwide or should I aim nationwide on the search engines? Thanks for your input in advance.

If the offers are available nationwide it would only make sense to target nationwide. Starting small and local however is a good start, but make it your advertising campaigns that are local perhaps and have the site made for all states to participate.
