A common question most families have are "What kind of meals I prepare for a Homestay student?". Most schools often recommended to continue developing the type of food you usually eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I disagree with this.

Meals in most countries are almost a rite of classes, a time for sharing and communication and a time to consolidate relationships. I take a different approach what I'd like to share my local tastes and style of cooking, but do not miss the opportunity to learn.

Make it a two way street – learn from the source.

Once a week, I like giving the International ESL students the opportunity to teach me a thing or two about style and taste in food.Â

I was surprised by how Korean miso integrate in their food, how the Spanish turn a simple combination of eggs, olive oil, potatoes and onions in a mouthful of flavor and how the Brazilian fresh meat grilled to perfection.

So far I have hosted students from 3 funds Asia (Korea), Europe (Spain) and South America (Brazil). Everyone I've found have a distinct taste to a certain type of flavor and starch.

Starches are a base – the construction of the same

Starches are important to complement your kitchen so we concentrate on it as a base and be creative around it. Let's break down my recent experiences with my students for each fund.

Korean students

I have asked by my Korean students who prefer rice. White rice is common, but the preference is sprouted brown rice and purple rice. I had never heard of these types of rice, and wow! that are full of flavor.

Outbreaks of rice has a hint of nutty flavor, while the purple rice, sticky rice that has a flavor soft flowers to it. With these rices can pair friction stir fried vegetables and grilled chicken or beef with light soy or teriyaki baste. Easy 30 meals provided and when the rice is cooked ahead of time.

Spanish students

My Spanish speaking students always asked for a pasta dish base. Can I say, "Easy"? That's right. Wait! Actually, that's the challenge. They come from a country where many ingredients are fresh, how compared to his shop to buy pasta sauce in a jar. No!

Since then I have learned to incorporate fresh herbs in common stock purchased pasta sauce and the jump of the flavors on your palette. It's so easy to make.

A couple of teaspoons of olive oil and then throwing them in garlic and herbs such as basil and oregano to sizzle for 10 seconds before pouring the sauce add a depth of flavor previously unknown.

Brazilian students

Another surprise was the request of my students for meals Brazilian style bread. Sandwiches exotic melts and not break the bank were in order and I was happy to enjoy.

I took the students to the local supermarket with me and after about 15 minutes of purchases of meat and cheese were making sandwiches with grilled meats could not say – who cares? You should talk with your mouth full anyway.

If you're reading this and is one of the above countries I know it can make very general recommendations, but most of these are based on the number of students who have welcomed me and their requests.

Individuals are unique and have a conversation in one day host relationship is the best way to discover and what you do not like the food and cook accordingly.
